Kahuku Ranch is a reef break on the west side of the Kau coast, out toward South Point on Hawaii's southern tip. It throws big, hairy peaks over an uneven reef, breaking both left and right when a solid swell is running.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west, and it comes alive on anything with south in it, with south swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there's a wide window between the smaller days and the days it turns big and serious. Expect it to be moderately consistent rather than something that shows up on demand, so it rewards checking when a S swell fills in.
Wind and Tide
The peaks go offshore in the northeast trades, which is the setup to look for. It can work through most of the tide, across low, mid, and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-level wave when it's on, with big, powerful peaks that ask for confidence in the water. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's breaking.
Access
There's free parking and roadside parking at the spot. Be aware the road gets much worse a mile or so south, and even 4x4s can get into trouble around the trails of South Point.
