Overview
Kamala Beach is a beginner-friendly beach break on Phuket, sitting just north along the coast and visible from the Khao Phanthurat pass. The sandbanks here get stabilized by nearby reefs, which helps the setup hold shape and gives improvers a forgiving place to log hours. There's also a small, surfable point/reef in the mix, though it's inconsistent and comes and goes.
When It Works
Breaking over sand, Kamala draws swell from southwest through west (SW-W), with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, offering both lefts and rights and staying moderately consistent through the season. When it gets big the waves tend to go fat and slow rather than punchy, so the mid-range is where it's most fun. The northern end picks up more swell, so drift that way when you want a bit more size.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind to clean things up. The beach works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. If you're surfing the northern end, it breaks better at low.
Local Tips
This is a solid improver spot and a comfortable place to progress, well suited to beginners finding their feet. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, though it tends to draw fewer crowds than Kata or Kalim.
Access
There are restrooms and a lifeguard on the beach, plus free roadside parking close by.
