Overview
Kartoffelkiste Wenningstedt is a consistent, hollow shorebreak on Sylt that breaks over sand and peels both left and right. It holds the biggest swell on the island, so it keeps working when heavier surf shows up.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from the southwest through to the north (SW-N), and lines up best on a northwest (NW) swell. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there's room for both smaller days and the bigger stuff. Being a shorebreak, it stays fairly consistent once the swell is in.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. It works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and it's at its best around mid tide on the incoming push.
Local Tips
The waves suit intermediate surfers. Easy access means it gets crowded whenever it's on, so expect a busy lineup when it works, and follow the lifeguards' instructions to keep things smooth.
Access
Getting in is easy, and there's a car park with free parking. In summer it turns into a big beach scene with camping, showers, a surf school, and lifeguards on patrol.
