Keawaiki Bay is a reef break that peels both left and right over an uneven fringe of coral and lava. Any west swell should reach that reef and open up quick barrel sections in both directions, making it a fun, playful set-up when the pieces line up.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from southwest through northwest, with west (W) swell the best match for the reef. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so you want a bit of size on the coast before making the trip. Consistency is moderate, meaning it won't fire every day, but there are worthwhile windows when the swell and wind agree.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. Those southeast trades hold the wave up nicely and are a big part of what makes the barrels stand up. The reef can work through most of the tide, across low, mid, and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable reading a reef and picking off both lefts and rights. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
There is free roadside parking near the highway, but reaching the water takes some effort. Plan on a trek in from the road, or the walk along the Kings Highway Foot Trail. The pay-off is a nice beach to hang out on once you have made it down.
