Keya is the main surf break in western Fukuoka, a beach break over sand that peels both left and right. The waves have real power and the spot can handle some size, so it holds up when other beaches wash out. Down by the golf course is usually where the biggest and best waves break.
When It Works
Keya draws swell from west through north to northeast (W-N-NE), and it comes together best on a northeast swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, giving you plenty of room from small clean days up to bigger, more powerful sessions. Expect it to be moderately consistent, with worthwhile windows when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind. The curve of the beach helps here, opening up a wider band of offshore directions from northeast through to southwest depending on where you set up. It works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves are approachable enough for beginners, so it is a good spot to find your feet. Expect a busy lineup when it is working.
Access
There are restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand. Parking is easy, with a car park offering free parking alongside paid and roadside options.
