Overview
La Boya sits out on the point and is possibly the best left in the country. It throws fast, hollow lefts over a ledge of flat rock and sand. Those rocks may be flat, but they can still be vicious, so this one is for experts only. Just across the point, the rights peel into Playa Montoya, a hollow beachbreak that sits more exposed to the wind.
When It Works
The left needs a decent southeast swell to get going, and southeast (SE) is the optimal direction, though it will take anything from east to south (E-S). It works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Once it's on, the rides are fast and split into various sections, so wave selection becomes a bit of a lottery. It's somewhat inconsistent, so you won't score it every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind, though the point also handles northeast winds well. It breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert territory, both for the speed of the wave and the flat but nasty rock underneath. A crowd is guaranteed here, so expect a busy lineup whenever it's working.
