La Côte Sauvage Surf Forecast Guide

La Côte Sauvage is 15km of west-facing beachbreaks running over sand, throwing up both lefts and rights along the strand. It needs an offshore wind to shape worthwhile rides, but when it lines up it can turn hollow and heavy, imitating the power of the Landes further south. The stretch is more reliable in the north near Pointe Espagnole; when that isn't firing, La Bouverie and the Coubre lighthouse to the south are worth a look. It's a regular contest site.

When It Works

The beaches draw swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with northwest the best match for clean, worthwhile surf. The break is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there's a wide working window between too small and too big. Expect moderately consistent conditions across the season.

Wind and Tide

An offshore wind is what turns these banks on, so look for east wind to groom the faces. The beaches work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a good fit for intermediate surfers, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet even when it's working. It's an exposed open beach, so keep an eye on the strong undercurrents and longshore drift that can move you down the strand quickly.

Access

There's a surf school on hand along with restrooms and camping, and campsites are plentiful along this coast. For parking, you'll find a car park with free parking as well as roadside spots.
