Overview
La Couronne breaks over an uneven reef around Cap Couronne, and both sides of the cape get surfed depending on the wind. On its day it throws up powerful, tubey lefts at Vieille-Couronne with two distinct sections, alongside the hollow but disputed rights of l'Arquet. It's one of the few spots in the area that genuinely holds overhead surf.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southeast the best direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is on the lower side, so you'll want to wait for the setup to line up. When it gets very big in southwest conditions, look for shelter at nearby Ponteau instead.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind, which favors the rights at l'Arquet, while a southeast wind suits the left at Vieille-Couronne. Onshore wind isn't a problem here, and the Mistral blows offshore. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-level wave, and the lineup gets busy with skilled surfers when it's on. Watch the swirling currents and sets inside the small bay, which can carry the unwary close to the rocky cliffs.
Access
There's a car park with free parking.
