Overview
La Derecha - The Bubble is an explosive, tubular reef peak and the most famous spot on the island. It breaks both ways over super-shallow, uneven reef, throwing out perfect bowly rights and peeling lefts. As a regular competition site, the wave has a serious reputation to match its shape.
When It Works
The peak picks up swell from west through north to east (W-N-E), with northeast swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, giving it a wide working range once a real swell arrives.
Wind and Tide
Look for south offshore wind to groom the peak. Tide matters here: the reef only works from mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call. Stay out of the water around low.
Local Tips
This is strictly an expert wave. Only paddle out if you can handle air drops and take off deep behind the peak. Its fame means locals are all over it, so getting in at first light is realistically the only way to catch set waves. The reef itself is spiky and holds urchins, which adds to the consequences of the shallow take-off zone.
Access
There's free roadside parking, and camping is available for anyone planning to stay close to the wave.
