La Galea surf guide

La Galea is a surf spot located at the Bilbao rivermouth. It’s known for its right point break that can be quite challenging. As a surf destination, it’s not too crowded, which might be a plus if you’re looking to avoid the throngs of surfers. However, keep in mind that it’s situated in an industrial area that isn’t visually appealing. Access to the spot is tricky as you have to navigate a steep cliff, and parking can be limited.

This surf spot really comes alive with bigger swells. It works best with 8 feet (2.4 meters) or more of swell, and the ideal conditions hit when the swell is coming from the NorthWest. You can also catch decent waves with swells from the West and North. The right-hand waves are quite powerful and break over uneven reef, making it suitable primarily for expert surfers. For those who are keen to hit the waves, low to mid tide works best, and east winds are your friend here.

While you're there, remember that it can be very inconsistent, working only a few times a year when the conditions align perfectly. So, if you're planning a trip, keep an eye on the swell forecasts. La Galea can be a tough spot to ride, but when everything clicks, it can offer some solid waves.
