La Izquierda / Spanish Left surf guide

La Izquierda, also known as Spanish Left, is a popular surf spot located at Playa de Las Americas. It's known for its famous left-hand waves that break over a lava platform. The waves can spin down the line for up to 100 meters, making it a favorite among many surfers. However, it can get pretty crowded, so be prepared to share the lineup with plenty of others.

The waves here suck on take-off, creating a hollow start that can challenge surfers. After the initial drop, the wave turns into a solid wall with sections that offer cover-ups. While it's primarily known for its lefts, there are also some short rights. The spot works best with a northwesterly swell and can handle swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters). The reef setup means it's essential to be cautious, especially during overhead conditions, which are best suited for experienced surfers. Intermediates should consider looking for more manageable waves elsewhere.

The best wind direction here is from the east, and the waves can work during low, mid, or high tide. Keep in mind that the reef can be shallow and sharp, so it's important to know your limits. Localism can also be an issue, so be respectful out there.
