Overview
La Piste/VVF is one of the most photographed beaches on the coast, with semi-submerged blockhaus scattered across the sand and a large dune system holding the suburbs at bay. When it's on, it turns out top-quality beachbreak, throwing regular, perfect barrels over shifting banks that peel both left and right.
When It Works
The banks here carry more punch and urgency than just about anywhere in Hossegor, so once it pushes to head-high and beyond, expect air drops and the occasional solid flogging. It takes more swell energy than the open beaches to the north before it fires. It draws swell from west to north, with northwest (NW) the best direction, and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is high, so there's rarely a shortage of waves when a swell is running.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind, since this spot hates the onshore. Low to mid tide is prime time, when the swell really focuses on the banks, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Strong currents run through here, and without those rips it would be more of a straight-hander, so this one is for confident intermediates only. It can get tense in the water, and the lineup is very busy, packed with shortboarders and bodyboarders trading the shorey. Expect to share peaks with skilled locals and plenty of tube-hungry visitors.
Access
The big VVF camping village sits right on the beach, and there are more sand-dredging peaks up that way, though extra space isn't guaranteed. You'll find showers, a lifeguard, and camping on hand. Parking comes as a car park with free spaces, plus paid and roadside options.
