La Virgen is a challenging left reef and point setup that wraps around the rocky southern point from El Amir, breaking in front of the Virgin Mary statue. When it turns on, it throws up rumbling walls and the odd barrel on the drop, and it holds some size. This is firmly an experts-only wave.
When It Works
The wave peels left over an uneven reef and takes swell from east through southeast, with an east (E) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It is moderately consistent and less reliable than the beaches to the north, so it tends to draw a crowd on the days it fires.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. La Virgen can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is for expert surfers only. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it comes to life.
Access
Getting out is tricky, picking a way through a jumble of urchin-dusted rocks, currents, and vertical drops. Onshore you will find restrooms, showers, and a surf shop, along with a car park offering free parking plus paid and roadside options.
