Overview
Labenne-Ocean is a beachbreak that throws up heavy peaks close to shore, breaking both left and right over sand. When a moderate northwest swell lines up with offshore wind, those peaks can hand out real tube time to the local crew and visitors alike. It's a consistent break, so there's usually something to ride when the swell is in.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from west to north (W-N), and northwest (NW) is the direction that brings out its best. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, covering everything from smaller days up to serious size. The heaviest, hollowest peaks show up on a moderate NW swell with the wind behind them.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean up the peaks. The break works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Be aware that it takes a decent-sized swell to break through high tide, and the shorebreak turns very heavy when it does.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, and note that a lack of sand tends to concentrate the crew onto just a few working peaks.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, plus restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, and a surf school on hand. You can size up the waves easily from the car park, or from Ondres, 3km down the beach.
