Laguna Beach is a series of fickle reefbreaks scattered along the coast, with the best-known peaks at the ends of Thalia, Oak, and Brooks streets. When it comes together it produces a high-quality wave breaking over rock ledge and sand, offering both lefts and rights. Brooks Street in particular can throw up a great left.
When It Works
The reefs draw swell from south through west-southwest to northwest, with a southwest (SW) swell the best match. It needs a bit of size before it starts to break, so plan on it being usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is moderate, and the standout sessions tend to land on medium-sized winter swells. It can get genuinely good when everything lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The reefs work across low, mid, and high tide, but a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who can read a shifting reef setup. Expect a very busy lineup on the days it turns on, since the good sessions draw a crowd.
Access
There's a lifeguard on the beach and a surf shop nearby. Parking is free but limited, spread along the residential streets with roadside and restricted spots, so give yourself time to find a space.
