Overview
Langland Bay is South Wales' do-it-all spot, with something for most surfers depending on the tide. It works over a mix of sandbanks and uneven reef, and the waves shift around the bay as the tide moves: The Shorey holds up at high tide, then Rotherslade's lefts and The Reef start working as it drops, while Middle of the Bay and the Sandbar stay busy at lower tides. Waves break both left and right, and it earns a decent, flexible rating with plenty of potential to find good peaks in clean swells.
When It Works
It draws swell from southwest through west, with southwest the best match. The working size runs from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, roughly waist high to head and a half. Conditions are moderately consistent, and while it works year round, the best stretch is autumn into winter, from September through February.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the north. The bay breaks through the tides, from low to high, with a rising tide generally the better call. Watch for rips when it gets big and on a dropping tide.
Local Tips
This is a friendly one for beginners, and just about any board suits it, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, bodyboards and SUPs. Expect a busy lineup whenever it works, with a competitive but generally relaxed and respectful vibe.
Access
There's a beachfront car park with paid parking that gets rammed in summer. On hand you'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop.
