Lanzarote - west coast surf guide

Lanzarote's west coast boasts some unique surf spots, with both beach and reef breaks that cater to experienced surfers. The most notable areas are El Golfo and Playa de Janubio, which face west and can handle a variety of swell sizes. While the scenery is pleasing, keep in mind that these spots can be quite formidable when the conditions align.

The optimal swell direction for surfing here is from the west, but you can also see some action with northeast swells. The height of the waves can range from 1ft (0.3m) and can break over uneven reefs or sand, providing both left and right-hand waves. However, due to the unpredictability of the breaks and the often chaotic line-up, this spot is best suited for expert surfers who can navigate the strong currents and rips.

When planning your sessions, aim for low to mid tide, as the waves tend to work better during these periods. The preferable wind direction is from the east, which can help shape the waves and make for a better ride. Regardless, always be cautious about the conditions, as they can change rapidly.
