Le Porge is a consistent beach break on sand near Bordeaux, throwing both lefts and rights. On a good morning it can be a pretty picture from the dunes, with an offshore breeze grooming head-high A-frames on the mid-tide banks.
When It Works
Being reliable, Le Porge picks up swell from southwest to northwest (SW-NW), and lines up best on a west (W) swell. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there is plenty of range to play with. The outside bank gets sucky and fast, and it has a habit of closing out at low tide, so time your session for the banks that are breaking cleanest.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) offshore wind to hold the faces open. The beach can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The mid-tide banks in particular tend to produce those cleaner A-frames.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly beach break. Expect a busy lineup when it works, though several parking lots feed different peaks, so you can often spread out and find your own bank.
Access
As the closest spot to Bordeaux, Le Porge draws crowds in season, and Camping Municipal La Grigne fills up fast. There is a car park with free parking, plus restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. Watch out for the strong currents that run along this stretch.
