Overview
Les Sables d'Olonne sits in a sheltered bay that stays surfable even when the open beaches are maxed out or blown out by north winds. It is never a standout, but the Bay of Les Sables is a dependable fallback, breaking both left and right over a mix of uneven reef and sand, with a large reef helping to hold the sand in place. Close to the jetty holds up best when there is size, while just to the south, Tanchet picks up more swell and throws fewer close-outs.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from southwest through northwest, with southwest the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, giving a wide working window before it turns too small or too big. Expect moderately consistent conditions.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners, cleaner and smaller than the exposed beaches nearby. That shelter comes at a price: expect a busy lineup when it turns on.
Access
Plenty of support is on hand, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, camping, and both a surf school and a surf shop. For parking, there is a car park with free parking, paid options, and roadside spaces.
