Overview
Loisells Beach, also known as Waihau Bay, is a set of exposed beachbreaks anchored by the odd rocky patch, with waves peeling over a mix of uneven reef and sand. It sits on a good stretch of coast and pulls in plenty of swell. A rock and sand point sits within walking distance to the north if you want to scout another option.
When It Works
The beach picks up swell from the northeast through east-southeast to south, and it comes together best on an east (E) swell. Peaks offer both lefts and rights, so there's room to spread out and pick your line. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, which covers small clean days up to solid head-high surf. Expect moderately consistent conditions, so it's worth checking when a good swell is running.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The banks break on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable spot that suits beginners finding their feet. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on.
