Long Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Long Beach is a sand-bottom beachbreak on Vancouver Island that serves up both rights and lefts, and it earns its name: the full stretch runs roughly ten miles from Wickaninnish Beach in the south up to Schooner Cove in the north. Surfers usually mean something much smaller, the half mile or so between Lovekin Rock and Incinerator Rocks. The Lovekin zone curves outward and faces more west, so it pulls in noticeably more swell, with reliable banks on either side. Off the north side you'll find an a-frame peak, with slopey lefts peeling up the beach and a steeper, walled righthander running toward the rocks and into a rip. It's a wave with a lot of moods, and on a given day you'll see a bit of everything. Mostly it's a softer, crumbly wall you can lean into, though the south side turns shallow and dredgey when the pieces line up.

When It Works

Swell arrives from south-southeast through south to west (SSE-S-W), and the beach is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft. It's a year-round setup, working through spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and the overall quality is decent when the banks cooperate.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from north to east (N-E). The beach can work through most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call. The north side prefers mid to high water, while the south side comes into its own from low to mid.

Local Tips

There's room here for just about everyone, from beginners through to experts, and the wave suits shortboards, fish, funboards, and longboards alike. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, with a somewhat reserved feel in the water. It's usually mellow, though when the wedges close to the rock switch on, a pack of locals will be running the peak, especially on the south side.

The paddle deserves respect. Getting back to the lineup can be a long slog, and the alongshore currents are often brutal. Cheat your paddle out by jumping in beside the rock and letting the rip carry you, and on the south side, run-arounds back to the rock are a great option after long rides. Watch for strong currents near Lovekin Rock, plenty of flailing beginners through the summer months, and big, aggressive sea lions down on the south side. The water itself is very clean.

Summer brings the crowds, packed with beachgoers and surfers of every stripe. Winter can be sneakily empty, and since the sandbars usually aren't at their best late in the year, it opens the door to a solo session if you're willing to make the drive.
