Mahaiula Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Mahaiula Bay is a right-hand reef break tucked inside Kekaha Kai State Park, one of a handful of quiet waves peeling over dead coral in pristine, lava-framed surroundings. When a west swell fills in, the wave wakes up and breaks hard and fast.

When It Works

It draws swell from the southwest through northwest, with west swell the best match. The break is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, giving a decent working band once the size shows up. Consistency is on the patchy side, so it can take some waiting for the right swell to line up.

Wind and Tide

Look for east offshore wind to clean it up. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

It suits intermediate surfers when it's on, and you can expect a busy lineup when the wave is working.

Access

Kekaha Kai State Park is the way in to this stretch of reef. From here, a long hike north across desolate lava fields leads to the powerful, shifty rights at Makalawena, which don't mind the east trades.
