Overview
Mahia Reef sits around the front of the Mokotahi cliffs, a left-hand point that breaks over uneven reef. It offers slopey lefts that shoulder predictably, which makes it a friendly option for improvers and longboarders. It usually stays quiet, since the surrounding points tend to be firing in the same conditions, so it works better as a fallback than a first choice.
When It Works
The point really comes to life on a major south swell. It draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south (S) the best match, and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is the weak point here, so expect somewhat inconsistent surf, especially with better points nearby soaking up the same swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. It works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call, and the lefts favor a pushing tide.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers best, and you can expect a fairly quiet lineup when it works.
Access
From Napier, head north on State Highway 2 through Wairoa to Nuhaka, then follow Nuhaka Opoutama Road and turn onto Ormond Drive toward Mahia Beach. Turn right onto Moana Drive, then right onto Newcastle Street, and head to the point at the southern end of the beach. Park just before the point; from there it is a short walk out to the end. There is a car park with free parking as well as roadside parking, and facilities include restrooms, showers, and camping.
