Makaha Surf Forecast Guide

Makaha is a beachbreak on Lima's Miraflores coast, sitting on the north side of the jetty that carries the La Rosa Nautica restaurant out on its pier. It breaks both left and right over boulders and sand, though power is in short supply and rolling, slopey walls are the norm. As the cradle of Peruvian surf culture, the spot carries a lot of history.

When It Works

Makaha draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest the best match, and it stays fairly consistent. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft; once it pushes overhead the break tends to close out and surfers shift south for more protection. Chasing the outside sets can be a long, tiring paddle, so use the channels beside the jetty or ride the inside reforms on a floaty board.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast offshore wind, and get in early before the onshore fills in chop that does little for the already soft waves. It works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide the better call.

Local Tips

Makaha is a good place to learn, and many do, with three surf clubs based on the beach. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, plus weekend crowds, though the shifting peaks soak up plenty of surfers. Keep an eye out for strong rips outside the jetties to the north, and note some pollution and run-off in the water.

Access

There's a car park with paid parking, along with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf school on hand.
