Overview
Mangamari is one of the best right-hand points around, a rocky shoreline straddling a golden sand beach. On big, glassy days the waves peel for up to 800 metres. As the lines start bending by Mangamari Peta point, around 90% of the swell size is still breaking on the first rock clusters, so there is plenty of wave to work with.
When It Works
The point draws swell from southwest through north to northeast, with south the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and breaks right over a mix of rock ledge and sand. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to catch it when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest offshore wind. Heavy refraction inside the bay keeps it offshore all day through the southwest monsoon. The point works across low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. At high tide the waves can unzip fast into a real tubular wall despite some backwash, while at lower tides the rocks split the wave in two.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly point, and the fun sandbanks suit longboarding well. Expect a quiet lineup.
Access
It is a long walk back along the beach. Keep in mind that river flow can push pollution into the lineup.
