Overview
Manzanillo is a big bay on the Colima coast with sand-bottomed beach breaks peeling both left and right. Most surfers arriving in the area start here, and the bay holds a few very different setups: Playa Miramar is the gentle end of things for learners on a small south swell, Olas Altas turns challenging for the local crew when southwest to west pulses arrive, and La Boquita offers a super protected right point on huge days.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with west swell the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, which covers everything from a mellow learner day at Miramar to the bigger pulses that switch on Olas Altas and send people around to the point at La Boquita. Consistency is moderate, so it is worth watching for the windows when the swell lines up rather than expecting waves every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. The workable window runs broadly from northwest, which favours the point, around to east-northeast, which cleans up Olas Altas. The bay surfs through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a good stretch of coast to learn on, with beginner-friendly waves in the bay. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works: locals surf here a lot, while travellers passing through tend to keep heading south.
Access
There is a surf school in the area if you want a hand getting started. Parking is easy enough, with a free car park plus roadside spots.
