Matadeiro is a river mouth left that breaks over sand and can be superb when the sandbars line up. The standout waves are the lefts peeling off the rivermouth, but the banks shift constantly, so you might instead find rights running back toward the river or short, close-out sections down the beach.
When It Works
Matadeiro draws swell from east through south, with southeast swell the best match for the lefts. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Conditions can be inconsistent, so the good days often come down to the sandbars and swell lining up together.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest offshore wind to clean it up. The rivermouth can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working. If you're after a quieter session, Praia da Armação just to the north can offer some calmer options.
