Overview
Maverick's is one of surfing's rare perfect giant waves, a big-wave reef breaking a little under half a mile off Pillar Point. The peak is marked by a clump of Stonehenge-like boulders on the inside, two of them named Mushroom Rock at the south end and Sail Rock to the north. Massive swells travel out of deep water and slam into a shelf of reef and boulders about 20 feet down at high speed, jacking up into a right that runs long, with a short, explosive left off the same peak. The water is clean and the setup is genuinely world-class, but only for surfers equipped to be out there.
When It Works
This is a winter wave, firing from November through February when the big swells line up. It draws swell from west to west-northwest (W-WNW); due west is bowly but dangerous and pushes into the rocks, while west-northwest (WNW) comes in more lined up and safer. It works from 7.6 m / 25 ft to 24.4 m / 80 ft, roughly four to eight times overhead, so it only switches on when the ocean is genuinely huge. Paddling in is possible, though it can get very strong on the biggest XXL days.
Wind and Tide
Look for east-northeast (ENE) offshore wind, ideally light rather than strong, and there's a workable wind window from north-northeast to east-southeast (NNE-ESE); some surfers even like a touch of onshore. Low and mid tide both work, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
Maverick's is an expert-only wave ridden on guns and tow boards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with a friendly atmosphere among the crew, though plenty of the crowd are there to watch rather than paddle out. The break has a few distinct zones: the Corner is the deep takeoff for the rights on the north end, Lates Bowl catches sets that shift wide to the south, the Outer Bowl only comes into play on the very biggest days, and the Cauldron just inside the Corner is a set of boils best avoided.
Access
Parking is in the lot when you can get a spot, and many surfers reach the break by wave runner out of Pillar Point Harbor.
