Overview
Middles is one of Puerto Rico's best and most coveted waves, a shallow, bowly right-hand tube that breaks close to shore outside Isabela on the north coast. The reef is an irregular coral and rock shelf jutting out from a golden sand beach, and a large rock at the east end reflects incoming north swell while deflecting the northeast trades right at the take-off peak. It's a powerful wave, punchy even when small and happy to hold plenty of size beyond double overhead. Occasional lefts streak across the reef, but it's the rights that draw the crowds. Middles hosted the 2010 Rip Curl Search Pro along with many other contests.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from northwest through north to east (NW-N-E), with northeast (NE) swell the best match. Any north swell hits the shelf head-on, and depending on direction the wave bends into a short, intense bowl or a longer, slightly less intense wall. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and even under head-high it can turn shifty, steep and fast. Autumn and winter are prime: late summer and fall deliver tropical cyclone swells, while late fall through early spring brings the most consistent run. On the whole it's a consistent spot.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind, though the wind here is more often onshore. It can work across low, mid and high tide, with lower water on a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-level wave that suits shortboards and bodyboards. Expect a busy but friendly lineup when it's on, and a local vibe that runs intense when it's perfect and eases off when it's just average. Keep an eye out for urchins on the coral shelf.
Access
Getting in is easy, with the coast road curving right past the sand so you can pull over and park roadside for free at the break. There's a surf shop close by. Car break-ins are a known concern, so don't leave anything valuable in the car.
