Overview
Miri-Miri is an intense right-hand reef break on Raiatea, the largest island and administrative centre of the Leeward Islands, about 220 km / 138 mi northwest of Tahiti. Once known as Havaii, the original land of the Maohi and a centre of religion and culture a thousand years ago, Raiatea is a sacred island, something its many marae still bear out. Its surf spots sit in remote surroundings, and Miri-Miri is one of the main names here, throwing up rights over live coral.
When It Works
Miri-Miri draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with southwest (SW) swell the best match, and it comes alive on the smaller southwest swells. The break is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Quality leans heavily on swell direction and wind exposure, so it rewards waiting for the setup to line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
