Monahan's Dock Surf Forecast Guide

Monahan's Dock, also known as State Pier #5 and Tucker's Dock, is one of Rhode Island's heaviest waves. A rocky pier at the end of the seawall sets up a short, punchy A-frame breaking over boulders, with a heavier, hollower right and a softer, more rippable left. It's a proper reefbreak and one of New England's neatest setups.

When It Works

The peak draws swell from east through south, and lines up best on a south (S) swell. It's usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, so it takes anything from chest high up to well overhead. Autumn and winter, roughly September through December, are the prime months, though the spot can be somewhat inconsistent. The right holds the best waves, dredging into a bowly end section, while the left is softer and crumblier. There's rarely much current here, even when it's big.

Wind and Tide

Look for west (W) offshore wind. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. At low tide expect top-to-bottom, thick barrels with a critical take-off right in front of the dock; higher tides bring an easier take-off that walls into the bowly end section.

Local Tips

This is an experts-only wave built for shortboards. The takeoff zone is tight and the lineup gets busy, so expect company when it's on. The reef breaks plenty of boards, so come prepared.

Access

There's a free car park plus limited roadside parking.
