Overview
Mundaka is a dream left-hand rivermouth barrel, widely considered one of the best waves of its kind. A long triangular sandbank catches strong swells and can turn them into long, flawless tubes, with rides up to 150โ200 meters possible.
The take-off is steep and challenging, leading straight into a heavy barrel section and then a long, fast wall. It breaks over sand, but it can feel reef-like when it detonates onto the shallow bank.
When It Works
Mundaka is best in autumn and winter, especially from September to February. It is almost never working in summer and is only rideable around 50 days a year.
The optimal swell direction is northwest, with a broader west to north swell window. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. When a big northwest swell comes through, staying in position can be very difficult.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is southwest. Classic autumn days can come with strong south to southwest winds.
Low tide is the key window, and a rising tide is better. It can work from low to around mid tide, but the outgoing rip can be horrendous.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave on serious days. Shortboards and guns fit the spot.
The lineup is very busy, with up to 100 surfers out on a really good day in season. The outer peak is heavily contested, but waves farther down the line can still offer excellent barrels with less pressure.
Be careful of the rip, the shallow sandbank, and getting in over your head. After rain, the rivermouth can make the water dirty.
Access
Access to the wave is a paddle from the harbor. The village has good facilities, with camping and a surf shop nearby.
Parking can be difficult when the wave is on. There is roadside parking and a car park, including the church parking lot overlooking the break, but the townโs one-way streets and alleys can be confusing.
