Mundaka surf guide

Mundaka is a well-known surf spot located at the mouth of a river in the Basque Country, Spain. It's famous for its left-hand waves and has a reputation as one of the best rivermouth breaks in the world. This small fishing village offers a unique combination of stunning scenery and challenging surf conditions. The town can get busy, especially when the waves are firing, but it holds onto a bit of that classic village charm.

The wave at Mundaka is shaped by the river and oceanic currents, creating a nearly perfect sandbank. With swells coming from the northwest, the wave can handle sizes from 6ft to 12ft (about 2 to 4 meters). When it’s on, expect long rides, with barrels reaching up to 200 yards (around 180 meters). The wave can be tricky to navigate, with steep, pitching take-offs that can be challenging, especially for those not at an expert level. It's best to surf during autumn and winter, with low to mid-tide being the sweet spot. The preferred wind direction is southwest. Watch for the rip that helps you get back to the peak after your ride.

Accessing the surf can be a bit complicated due to the narrow streets in Mundaka, but if you find a parking spot near the church overlooking the break, you’re in luck. The vibe in the water can be intense, with crowds reaching up to 100 surfers on the best days. Surfing here can be competitive, so if you sit farther down the point, you might snag a few good scraps. Overall, Mundaka is a world-class surf destination, but it requires skill and patience, especially with the locals around.
