Overview
Nanwan is a shapely right-hand reefbreak and the main beach for Hengchun, facing southeast. It peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand, with clean curves and a sculpted face. When the sand mix comes together and the swell gets bigger, the wave speeds up and barrels become a given. The bay holds other options too, including shallow rights and lefts at Houbihu Harbour and longer, hollow rights further out at Houbihu Point. Worth knowing before you paddle out: the local nuclear plant discharges cooling water into the bay.
When It Works
Nanwan draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southeast the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and a solid typhoon swell from the south is the classic setup. Consistency is moderate, so plan around the windows when everything lines up rather than expecting waves every day. When a south swell is running, more beachbreak scatters east along the Kenting resort beaches out toward Banana Bay.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The reef comes to life on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and having the skill to stay off the hungry coral reef matters here. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options nearby. Facilities are well covered, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop on hand.
