Overview
Nishinoura is a rocky left-hand reef break on the headland west of Fukuoka, where the coast juts out into the Genkai Sea. When it's on, the wave tubes and peels a long way over uneven reef.
When It Works
Nishinoura draws its swell from the northwest through to the northeast, with a north swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so it wants a bit of size before it comes to life. Consistency is on the patchy side, so it pays to catch it on the right window.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind to groom the faces. The reef works through most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave rather than a spot for beginners, with plenty of rocks to weave around once you're in the water. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
