Overview
Norte is Ilheus' most consistent beach, an endless stretch of sand running for roughly 50km. It breaks over clean sand and offers both lefts and rights along its length.
When It Works
Norte pulls in swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with east (E) the best direction, and just about any E swell tends to deliver something rideable here. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, which keeps it working across a wide band of conditions.
Wind and Tide
The lineup wants west (W) offshore wind, and pretty much any westerly flavour does the job. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide the better call, and the low-tide sandbanks are where the barrels turn on.
Local Tips
This is a friendly, beginner-suited beach with a fairly quiet lineup. The peak in front of the Eden One pousada is a good bet, and because the beach runs so far it soaks up and spreads out any crowd.
Access
There are multiple access points along the beach, with the road running parallel to the Rio Almada. You'll find a car park with free parking as well as roadside parking.
