Nyang Nyang Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Nyang Nyang is a right-hand reef break on the exposed south coast of Bali's Bukit peninsula, sitting at the bottom of impressive cliffs with a beautiful, empty beach below. It has earned a reputation as the island's "if it's flat here, it's flat everywhere" wave, so it tends to pick up whatever swell is running. The wave breaks over dead coral.

When It Works

The break draws swell from south through west, with southwest the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and maxes out quickly: once the rights push overhead, the barrel sections start to close out.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northeast offshore wind, but timing is everything here. Winter and summer trades are basically onshore, so early, late, or a flukey north wind is usually the go. The reef works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Higher tides put more water in the channel and give the lefts a better chance of showing alongside the rights.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers. Strong rips, sneaker sets, and plenty of sealife are all part of the deal, and the ragged reef always seems closer than it actually is. The long trail down keeps the lineup quiet, so you can often have it to yourself.

Access

Getting in means a long trail down the cliffs to the beach, and the walk back up is a grind. The payoff is a stunning, empty stretch of sand at the bottom.
