Overview
Oceanside Harbor sits at the northern end of San Diego County, in one of the county's most livable surf towns. The sandbars shift constantly along this stretch, but you'll find consistent peaks at the harbor's north and south jetties and on both sides of the pier. It's a punchy little beachbreak most days that can turn exceptional on a good combo or tropical swell, breaking both left and right over sand.
When It Works
Oceanside is angled to pick up southwest swells more readily than the beaches of central San Diego County, so it draws surfers from across the county when the southwest is running. It takes swell from south through west-southwest to west-northwest, and a combination of North and South Hemisphere swells is the best setup. The break works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it holds surf right through the year. On the better days, the peaks up and down the beach can be just as good as the main breaks by the harbor and pier.
Wind and Tide
Look for east-northeast offshore wind, with a workable window running from northeast to east. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits just about everyone, from beginners to experts, and it takes any craft you like, whether that's a shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, bodyboard, skimboard, or bodysurfing. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, with a somewhat reserved, proud but tolerant local feel. The paddle is average most days but can get brutal on a strong south or northwest swell when there's current running. Water quality can turn poor after heavy rain, so it's worth staying out for a few days after a big storm.
Access
Exit at Oceanside Harbor off the I-5 and head west to the beach. Take Pacific Street north to the harbor, or south for plenty of parking and easy access to the pier.
