Overview
Octagon is one of the most popular spots in Surfside, a stretch of open beach where sandbars sitting 150 to 300 yards offshore shape long, mushy but workable walls. Those walls can get large and take well to longer craft. On huge swells, the inside of the ship channel just to the south throws out a large, crumbly wall of its own. The bottom is all sand.
When It Works
Octagon draws swell from east through south to south-southwest, and the sandbars serve up both right and left walls. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, running from waist high on the smaller days up to bigger, heavier walls when a proper swell fills in. Spring and autumn are the prime seasons, and it holds up as a decent, consistent beachbreak with fun walls.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind, with a workable wind window from west to north. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a longboard and funboard spot, with mellow, workable walls that suit everyone from beginners to experts. Expect a busy lineup, especially on weekends, and a somewhat reserved but generally mellow crowd. Depending on the size, getting out can be a long paddle through multiple sandbars.
Access
Getting in is easy, but watch your step crossing the breakwater, which turns jagged at high tide. Keep an eye out for errant surfboards in the lineup too.
