Old Orchard Beach, or OOB, is a southeast-facing surf spot that tends to be less intense than nearby spots like Scarboro and Higgins Beach. While it might not always deliver the most exciting waves, the OOB Pier adds a unique aspect to this beachbreak, providing some decent lefts on the south side and a fair right on the north side. It's especially worth checking out during fall hurricanes when conditions can improve considerably. Most of the time, it handles swells between about 2 to 8 feet (0.6 to 2.4 meters), offering something for everyone from beginners to more experienced surfers.

In terms of the surf, this spot is typically best during low to mid-tide, with a preference for west winds. You can catch waves coming from the east, southeast, and even northeast, but note that NE swells don't always make it in smoothly. The waves usually range from waist high to a couple of feet overhead, so there’s enough variety to keep things interesting. The bottom is sandy, making it a good choice for those new to the sport as well as seasoned surfers looking to ride a shortboard, longboard, funboard, or fish.

Access to the beach comes at a cost during the summer, with private parking charging around $5 a day. Crowds can be moderate, especially in the busy summer months, but the vibe remains pretty chill overall. If you're planning to surf in winter, be prepared for much colder conditions, so pack your winter gear. There's a surf season from September through March, making it a decent spot for those looking to ride through the fall and winter months.
