Oostende is the biggest coastal city in Belgium and offers some of the best surf in the country, with the peaks on either side of the harbour pier the ones to look for. It breaks over sand and peels both left and right. Close-outs are often mushy, but when it lines up there are a few faster walls to be had.
When It Works
The break takes swell from northwest to northeast (NW-NE), and north (N) is the best direction. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
Unusually, the swell here needs onshore wind to drive it in, so don't hold out for glassy conditions. To clean things up, southeast (SE) is the offshore direction. Aim for low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Access
You'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop on hand. Parking is straightforward, with a car park offering free parking alongside paid, metered, and roadside options. In summer, surfing is restricted to the Outside surfclub west of the Thermae Palace Hotel, which runs lessons and board rental.
