Westende surf guide

Westende is a popular surf spot located along the Belgian coast, known for its average jetty breaks. It sits in front of the Westende surf club, which operates from a removable modular container structure. This setup means there are no hot showers, but the spacious free car park attracts plenty of surfers looking to get out on the waves.

The surf at Westende is suitable for beginners, handling swell sizes starting from about 1 ft (0.3 m). The waves primarily break over sand, and surfers can experience both left and right waves depending on the swell and wind conditions. The ideal swell direction is North, but it also picks up swells from the Northwest and Northeast. For the best surf experience, aim for a SouthEast wind and consider hitting the spot during low, mid, or high tide.

The Westende surf club offers board rentals and surf lessons, making it a great place for those just starting out. After hitting the waves, many surfers enjoy hanging out at the club's small bar, adding a social touch to the surfing experience here.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
    • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.
