Pacific Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Pacific Beach, fronting Crystal Pier, is a mellow beach-and-pier break that almost always has something to ride but is rarely truly good. Peaks break both left and right over a mostly sandy bottom that turns rockier as you head toward Tourmaline. It rates below average overall and is at its best as an easy longboard cruising wave.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from south-southwest through west-northwest and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Longer-period swells that push into the overhead range tend to close it out, especially away from the more defined sandbars around the pier. The zone comes closest to shining when a combo of northwest and southwest swell meets easterly wind, usually in the fall, opening fun peaks up and down the beach. Short-period northwest swells, most common in spring, are the other window worth watching. It works year-round but is most reliable through winter, autumn, and spring.

Wind and Tide

The workable wind window runs from north through east-northeast to east-southeast, with northeast (NE) the offshore direction. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide on a medium-to-high push is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beginner- and intermediate-friendly wave with an easy paddle-out, and it suits just about any board, from longboards and funboards to fish, bodyboards, and skimboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, with a mellow and sometimes reserved feel in the water. Keep an eye out for loose boards drifting through the crowd.

Access

Getting in is easy, with paid parking nearby. Water quality is usually fine but can get dicey after rain, so it's worth staying out then.
