Paignton Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Paignton is a red-sand bay in Devon that has always been better known as a tourist beach than a surf spot. The sheltered aspect keeps it flat most of the time, and it only comes to life in the right setup. The beach is largely featureless, but the best sandbanks sit near the pier. When it does break, expect mostly rolling waves, or fat, wedgy walls when a good swell fills in.

When It Works

This is a spot that needs some size to turn on. It wants a big southwest (SW) groundswell, or an easterly windswell to push waves onto the sheltered beach. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, running roughly thigh to head high on the bigger days. The sand bottom throws up both rights and lefts, and the season is firmly winter, with the strongest swells and storms rolling through from December to February. It rarely breaks, so patience and the right forecast matter here.

Wind and Tide

Look for a west (W) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The bay is best on the lower half of the tide, working from low to mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The waves suit beginners and intermediates when the bay is working, and it takes a wide range of boards, from shortboards and fish through funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved. Watch for rips when it gets big, and note the water can turn sewage-affected after heavy rain.

Access

There is beachfront parking all along the Esplanade, so getting to the water is straightforward.
