Palmetto Point Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Palmetto Point is a righthand sandbar barrel on the west coast of Barbuda, breaking over sand along a stunning pink-sand beach. When it fires, it throws serious tubes in very little water right up against the shore, and the take-off is tricky because the wave breaks close to the sand and never really lets up. The setting is pristine and remote, and the west and south coasts are usually flat unless a hurricane has moved into the area.

When It Works

The break draws swell from northwest through northeast, with northwest (NW) the optimal direction. The cleanest barrels form on big north to northeast swells as they sweep down the leeward side of Barbuda, while big southeast swells can turn on a few lefts instead. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Consistency sits on the lower side, so this is really a spot to check on the bigger swells of the year.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The bank can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an experts-only wave. The shorebreak barrel breaks in shallow water with a demanding take-off, so it rewards confident, experienced surfers and punishes anyone who hesitates. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.

Access

The area is undeveloped and pristine, with camping the main option, so plan to take all your supplies in and pack everything out. There's free roadside parking.
