Overview
Peñarronda is a beachbreak that peels over sand along a wide, open bay. Several peaks help spread surfers out, and the setting shifts with the seasons: the beach fills with beachgoers in summer and turns deserted and windswept in winter.
When It Works
The peaks favour swell from the northwest, though they'll take anything from the west round to north. Expect a mix of lefts and rights off the sandbars. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there's a decent working window for a beachbreak this exposed.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south offshore wind to groom the peaks, and you'll get a bit of shelter from southwest through west winds as well. It breaks on low and mid tide, with the cleaner walls forming through that window and a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. The lineup rarely gets busy, so you can usually pick a peak and have room to yourself.
Access
There's free parking right by the beach, plus showers and a lifeguard on hand. Camping is available nearby if you want to stick around for a swell.
