Pepino Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Pepino sits at the far eastern end of São Conrado, the mile-long beach between the mountains that you reach from Leblon along the twisting road past the Pontão de Leblon. The wave lives where the sand meets the huge rock headland: swells run up against the rocks and backwash off them, throwing up tricky, wedging peaks that break both left and right over sand. It's shallow, hollow and funky, and when it lines up it can be genuinely good. Locals call it "Pepinoline", and it has a reputation as one of Rio's shallowest waves, so the heavy break over shallow sandbanks is the thing to respect here. Worth knowing before you paddle out: there's a permanent sewage outlet, and heavy rains push all kinds of urban drainage garbage into the water.

When It Works

Swell arrives from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW), with southeast and south the better matches, and a south-southwest angle finding the western corner of the beach. The break is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft — plenty consistent and with real power behind it, but it doesn't cope with big swells and will close out once it gets too large, so around head high is the sweet window. Autumn and winter are the best seasons, though it breaks year-round. When Ipanema is flat, it's worth the drive: those rebounding peaks often still have something in them.

Wind and Tide

Look for north (N) offshore wind, with anything from north-northwest to northeast (NNW-NE) staying workable. The bank handles most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with a somewhat reserved feel in the water. It suits intermediate and expert surfers on a shortboard or bodyboard — the wave breaks close to the beach and the rides are short, so it's about picking the wedge rather than making a long section.

Access

Getting there is easy. Don't leave anything in your car or on the beach, and try to park where there's a parking attendant.
