Overview
Petit Loango is a remote beachbreak on Gabon's coast, where the surf breaks over sand along wind-exposed beaches that stretch for miles. It sees very few visitors: one of the last surf checks here came in December 2000, when National Geographic's Congotrek expedition reached the coast and found hippos swimming in the waves.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from south through southwest, with southwest (SW) the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and the peaks offer both lefts and rights. Surf here is moderately consistent, so expect worthwhile windows when the swell lines up rather than waves every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to groom the faces. The beach can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving, beginner-friendly beachbreak, and the lineup stays quiet.
