Overview
Piedras Blancas is a fun wave near San Simeon that changes character with the swell. When conditions are clean it fires as a thick, right-hand reefbreak; on smaller days it drops into a peaky, rocky beachbreak. The reef sits in front of a creek mouth and is clogged with seaweed and boils, yet it still throws a decent right that peaks on the outside, backs off, then reforms and bowls into the inside section. The bottom is a mix of sand, rock and reef.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from south-southwest through west-northwest (SSW-WNW) and works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It's fairly reliable once the swell is bigger than chest-high. When it's smaller, walk south of the short staircase to a wide beachbreak dotted with boulders and shallow reef, which comes into its own through summer but turns unsurfable once it's more than a few feet overhead. Expect rideable days across summer, autumn and winter.
Wind and Tide
Look for east-northeast (ENE) offshore wind, with a workable window running from northeast to east-southeast (NE-ESE). It comes alive on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call, with low favouring the reef and a bit more water suiting the beachbreak.
Local Tips
This one rewards intermediate and expert surfers on shortboards or guns. Expect a busy but friendly lineup when it's on, and be polite in the water, since there's a local presence alongside resident elephant seals and sharks in the area. Paddling can be demanding depending on size, especially once it's overhead.
Access
Take Highway 1 into San Simeon Acres, turn west onto Pico Avenue, and park in the tiny cul-de-sac at its end. From there, a staircase leads down to the sand. Water quality can drop after rain.
