Overview
Piedras Negras is a high-quality left-hand reefbreak that peels over an uneven reef. When it turns on, it's powerful and barreling, with a serious take-off section and flawless tubes running down the reef. The catch is the setting: it sits just 2 km from Ilo, a bustling industrial port with one of the country's largest copper smelters and a refinery close by, so expect air and water pollution around the break.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through southwest, with south (S) the best match. It's usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. The cleanest barrels show up in small to moderate swells carrying some south in them, when sparkling tubes breathe down the reef. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to time your sessions, but the good windows are worth the wait.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to hold the walls clean. The break comes to life from mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call. Two things shut it down: a west wind, which caves in the glassy walls, and dead low tide.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave, thanks to the power, the barrel, and the reef beneath it. The lineup stays fairly quiet, surfed mostly by a friendly local crew, many of them bodyboarders.

Parking is easy and free, with roadside spots right by the break.
