Piege a Sable, literally "the sand trap" and also known as Le Phare, is a left-hand sand pointbreak that comes into its own on big southwest swells. The waves are hollow and fast and deliver great rides, though the currents run heavy here. When it gets truly huge, a separate section reels off way inside.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west (S-W), and southwest (SW) is the direction that lines it up best. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft, with the sand bottom shaping those hollow lefts.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to groom the point. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Be ready for the heavy currents that run along the point when it's on.
Access
Getting here is the crux. Overland access runs through a military zone and can take a while even if you know the right people, so arriving by small boat or jet ski is the preferable option.
